How to edit scenery TTC textures?

  • Hello,

I have generated tiles for Colombia's Carribean area with satisfying results thanks to Aeroscenery.

The issue though is that the tiles have different tones which makes some parts look too green and transitions between tiles too obvious.

Is there a way to edit the color balance of the TTC files?

Did I had to edit the RAW files (that I have erased...) before and then to convert them in TTC? If yes, considering I'll have to regenerate all the tiles again, after adjusting the RAW files, how to convert them to TTC while adding trees and OSM data (as it seems these are done after Geonvert in Aeroscenery) ?

Thanks to anyone who can help!

  • As far as I know, the tone of aerial images depends on the block color of the image source. Generally, the difference won't be too large. Are you using the aerial images from bing Maps? If the difference is significant, you can change the image source because, in theory, the color of ttc files cannot be modified through an image editor. I hope this can help you. (I'm not familiar with the use of Aeroscenery. Please excuse me if there are any mistakes.)

I used Google imagery, thinking it would give good results but the tone of the tiles are really too far from each other. There's a long list of portential sources in Aeroscenery : Bing, ArcGIS, Here WeGo, Mapbox and national sattellite images. Reading about these different tools, I'm going to try Bing which provides the highest resolution. Thank you very much for your help.

Well, I've replaced some tiles with the new ones I've downloaded on Bing. It presents the exact same color issue, the water appearing heavily green, but I've discovered an option to replace all the water areas by a default texture, obviously to unify the water between the tiles. But it is indicated in Aeroscenery that it doesn't work on Bing's tiles.

I did some flying around the area and experienced something weird : the green water was replaced by blue water while I was flying, maybe around 1km in front of me, which is quiet unimersive. I do think that the color differences are obvious due to the water but less on the ground filled with trees and buildings (with that green tint, I can't even differenctiate the ground from the water, it is absolutely confusing). So I'm going to try again to create tiles from google with that water option.

EDIT : I've just check the Japan scenery available here and the tone is 100% the same for all tiles. I'm obviously missing something...

  • Some time ago I wrote to Schuffelduffel the author of beautiful sceneries that you can find on this website (Bella Italia for example) on the matter of creating sceneries. He told me he corrected each photo, via photoshop, in order to match colours (especially above water). Maybe he can help you sort out your problems.

  • Currently, the “stitched images” must be edited manually with a photo app - I use the free GIMP app - before the “Run Geoconvert” process is started in AeroScenery. For better results, in addition to the water also clouds should be retouched for making a high quality scenerie, which means a lot of work.

My next release of the AeroScenery MOD v1.1.3 "k", which is still in development, will include automatic water masking that preserves the original texture near the shoreline. However, this requires significantly more processing time for creation, as additional to the satellite images OSM maps are downloaded for the water masks. Also the distance to the shoreline must be calculated from every point in the water for a smoth transition.

Having a look at my first add-ons with automatic water masking, the result is very satisfying. Especially, no manual corrections are needed for the water anymore.
